Cleveland Heights Fall Sports Wrap Up: Gridiron Notebook

Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights and Beachwood each enjoyed many highs during the fall sports season.

It’s well documented that the Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights and Beachwood football teams had strong seasons that fell just short of the state tournament, but plenty of other sports had highs, too. From stunning upsets to state tournament runs, here is a look at some of the highlights from the fall sports seasons. Tigers soccer team falls just short of regional tournament The Cleveland Heights boys soccer team came very close to a bid in the regional tournament, falling to Mayfield 1-0 in the district championship. However, the Tigers scored one of their biggest wins in program history in the semis: A 1-0 victory over former LEL rival Mentor. In Sean Sullivan’s 11-year career as head coach for the Tigers, he’s never beaten the Cardinals…

Gridiron Notebook: Tigers Tame Titans

Cleveland Heights, Beachwood, Shaker Heights are all in the hunt for a playoff spot, but need help to move up in the computer rankings.

The Tigers dominated Lorain 41-13 behind Braxton Gamble’s five touchdown runs to keep their playoff hopes alive. The running back finished with 110 yards on 19 carries. Quarterback Taylor Jones added 135 yards on 11 carries. “The kids came out and played very, very hard,” Cleveland Heights coach Jeff Rotsky said. “Our defensive line had one of the best games of the year and we were certainly pleased. We believe that it was probably one of our all-around better games.” The Tigers took a 26-7 halftime lead and never looked back, controlling Lorain the entire way. Cleveland Heights sits at No. 11 — behind North Olmsted, Euclid and Shaker Heights — in the latest Division I, Region 1 rankings. However, according to Eitel the Tigers can finish …

Heights Wins, But Playoffs Look More Remote

Gamble scores 5 TDs in victory

No matter how many times Cleveland Heights senior running back Braxton Gamble smashed into the end zone against Lorain on Friday night, one could sense a certain futility lurking just below the surface. Gamble had five rushing touchdowns to punctuate the Tigers’ 41-13 victory and raise their record to an impressive 7-2 and 4-2 in the Lake Erie League, but the latest playoff projections have Cleveland Heights falling two spots short of the postseason with virtually no chance of moving up. A year after posting a perfect regular season, the feeling coming into this homecoming game was decidedly more subdued with fewer celebrities, more rain and a sparser crowd. Gamble splintered the defense of the Titans (2-7, 2-4 LEL) with three touchdown …

High School Football: Cleveland Heights Hanging on to Playoff Hopes

Cleveland Heights still has a chance to make the playoffs, but the Tigers will need some help

Cleveland Heights’ and Shaker Heights’ playoff fates are intertwined, being ninth and 11th in Division I, Region 1. Both the Tigers and Red Raiders will likely need help, in addition to winning out, as they each lack opponents with winning records in Week 9 and 10 to give their computer points a huge boost. Six of the eight teams currently in the playoffs are projected by Joe Eitel to have control of their own destiny — St. Edward, St. Ignatius, Willoughby South, North Royalton, Warren G. Harding and Mentor. Drew Pasteur’s simulations give all six of those schools a 100 percent chance to make the playoffs regardless of how many more games they win. Of those six, only two face one another in the remaining weeks — St. Edward and St. Ignatius…

Gridiron Notebook: Tigers Prep for Lorain After Loss to Warren G. Harding

The football playoffs are just two weeks away. Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights and Beachwood are all in the thick of the chase to qualify.

Warren G. Harding wanted to run the ball and it accomplished that in its 34-28 win over Cleveland Heights. Boston College commit LeShun Daniels totaled 227 yards and a touchdown on 36 carries while John Coleman added four more touchdowns and 89 yards. “Truthfully, I got outcoached,” Cleveland Heights coach Jeff Rotsky said. “We made some mistakes, our kids were prepared, but we didn’t execute so that comes down to me. We had the lead the whole game, unfortunately we didn’t tackle very well and got beat on three or four trick plays.” One was a reverse back to the quarterback, the other a fake punt. Both extended drives. Cleveland Heights (6-2, 3-2 LEL) took a 28-21 lead, but could not hold off Warren G. Harding (7-1, 5-0) down the stretch…

Gridiron Notebook: Heights Tigers Face Huge Test

The chatter among the coaches and players at Cleveland Heights, Beachwood and Shaker Heights

The playoffs may start a few weeks early for Cleveland Heights. The Tigers (6-1) square off against Warren G. Harding (6-1) Friday night at 7 p.m. in Warren. The Raiders are 4-0 in the Lake Erie League with Cleveland Heights a game back. A win revives the chance that the Tigers could win the league outright with a little help. But more importantly, the Tigers and Raiders are currently positioned in the final two playoff spots for Division I, Region I. After losing to Euclid, the Tigers cannot afford another misstep. “Last week was more about rebounding from (our poor performance against Euclid) and regaining focus,” Tigers coach Jeff Rotsky said. “Every game now our backs are against the wall. If we want an opportunity to play in the …

Gridiron Notebook: Cleveland Heights, Shaker & Beachwood Off to Strong Starts

The chatter among the coaches and players at Cleveland Heights, Beachwood and Shaker Heights

The football teams at Cleveland Heights, Beachwood and Shaker Heights each have 5-1 records. One squad outmanned the competition with a strong running game, while another racked up wins despite its youth. The three teams have a lot of upside, and it will be fun to watch them make a playoff push during the last few weeks of the season. Here are some reflections from the Tigers, Bison and Red Raiders. Cleveland Heights The 5-1 Heights Tigers won 14 regular season games in a row before losing 34-12 to Euclid last Friday. “We had no purpose in the Euclid game and that has been a big focus in practice this week," linebackers coach Keenan Chapman said. Head coach Jeff Rotsky agreed: “We were unfocused and that has been a focus for me and the …

Viewfinder: St. Edward Bests Cleveland Heights

Eagles now move on to face St. Ignatius in 'Holy War' rematch.

Editor's note: This recap was provided by Lakewood Patch contributor Duane Sycz, of drsphotography.com. A standing room only crowd at Crawford Field saw St. Edward High School hang on to beat Cleveland Heights 28- 14 in a hard fought game which was Cleveland Heights first playoff game in school history. St Ed's jumped out to a 14- 0 lead with two touchdown runs by running back Dwayne Heron. The second quarter continued with St Ed's running the ball, but this time it was Kenny Butler's turn. St Ed's relied on their running game heavily in the second quarter as well. Cleveland Heights got on the board when quarterback Bryce Jones tossed the ball to receiver Sheldon Gibson, who threw a 54 yard touchdown pass to Marcus McShepard to make the …
