FRIENDS of the Heights Libraries Offering Scholarship

The program is meant to encourage people to pursue library careers.

The FRIENDS of the Heights Libraries is now accepting applications for its 2013 Library Education Scholarship. The program was established to encourage careers in library science by offering financial assistance in graduate school, according to a fact sheet included with this article in the PDFs section. Scholarship awards are $500 per semester, and the money is provided to help students with tuition, books and other costs in any American Library Association-accredited graduate program in library science. Applicants must have lived in Cleveland Heights or University Heights or worked at a library in the cities for at least one year, and they must have a desire to pursue library science from an ALA-accredited school. Friends of the Libraries Sale Kicks Off Today

The public sale begins Friday at the Lee Road Library

The Friends of the Heights Libraries Book Sale preview kicked off Thursday at the Lee Road Library, and the public sale begins today and runs through Monday. Library staff members have weeded through the collection and the Friends have  gathered donated items to create a selection that includes 30,000 books and a variety of CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes and even vinyl records. Prices range from 50 cents to $2 and include hardcovers, large paperbacks, children's books, small paperbacks and CDs, VHS tapes and DVDs. The schedule is below, and includes special promotions: Proceeds from the sale benefit the Friends of the Heights Libraries, which supports the library system through programming and advocacy.

Friends of the Heights Libraries Sale Kicks Off Today

Proceeds from book, DVD, VHS and CD sale benefit Friends of the Heights Libraries

The Friends of the Heights Libraries is kicking off its pre-holiday sale today from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Lee Road Library. Children's and adult hardcover books are on sale for 50 cents, select paperbacks are five for $1, DVDs are $2 and CDs and VHS tapes are $1. Those who join the Friends, a non-profit organization that supports the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library, will earn a voucher for five free books, and receive other special discounts today. Annual membership dues are $10 for individuals and $25 for families. Friends of Heights Library Launches Art Contest

Artists must submit work that represents the theme 'books are the bridge to the world'

The FRIENDS of the Heights Libraries is hosting a community art contest as way to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the footbridge’s grand opening at Lee Road Library and the new Harvey & FRIENDS Bookshop/Café. People who are 18 and older are welcome to submit one piece of original artwork in any medium, but following a theme — “books are the bridge to the world.” The artwork must be two-dimensional, and be 2 x 3 feet or smaller, according to a press release from the FRIENDS. Contestants have until Sept. 30 to register and submit their work, but only 30 pieces will be accepted.
