Kelley: Call Center Will Not Move Into Millikin

Cleveland Heights Mayor Ed Kelley confirmed the developer will have space near Monticello and Mayfield, and School Board president Karen Jones said the CH-UH Board will consider putting Millikin up for public auction in its executive session tonight.

The Millikin controversy has come full circle. The recent debate over the former school was sparked by word that a call center was interested in the building, constructed in the mid-50's, at 1700 Crest Road. Cleveland Heights Mayor Ed Kelley confirmed that was no longer on the table at a meeting Monday night that included Cleveland Heights and University Heights city councils and the CH-UH School Board at the Cleveland Heights Community Center. About 400 people came to listen to the work session, the majority being Orthodox Jewish families from Mosdos Ohr Hatorah, which wants to buy Millikin. Kelley said the developer previously interested in opening a call center in the school building, owned by the CH-UH City School District, has a …

Cleveland Heights Patch Interviews New Council Member Jason Stein

Stein was appointed to Cleveland Heights City Council June 6

On June 6, Jason Stein was appointed to Cleveland Heights City Council. He replaces Mark Tumeo, who resigned in March.  Stein will serve until the end of the year, but must be re-elected in November to finish out Tumeo's term, which ends in 2013.  Cleveland Heights Patch asked the new council member questions about issues that are important to him and residents. The interview, which has been edited for length, is below.  Cleveland Heights Patch: How did you react when you found out you were selected by council? Jason Stein: It was very special for me, and I was obviously happy. And I was appreciative of council that they thought highly enough of me to appoint me as a council person, as a colleague, so it meant a lot to me. CHP: Many …

Bites Nearby: Melt Bar & Grilled

If grilled cheese sandwiches are your thing, welcome to Valhalla

MELT BAR & GRILLED — Almost single-handedly, Melt Bar & Grilled is changing the perception of the age-old toasted cheese sandwich. But instead of the flat version your mom served, made with two slices of Wonder Bread and one slice of Velveeta, the cheesy concoctions at Melt tower high above the plate. The menu lists more than two dozen enormous grilled cheese variations, all served on hefty Texas toast. These include the renowned Parmageddon constructed from two potato and cheese pierogies, vodka kraut, grilled onions and sharp cheddar. But there’s also a list of grilled cheeseburgers such as the Blackened Blue Burger, featuring blue cheese sprinkled on a cast-iron blackened patty. Of course, there are plenty of add-ons, so you can make …

Cedar Taylor Merchants, Neighbors to Meet Again Monday

Next week's meeting is one of several that have been scheduled to discuss improving the business district

The city of Cleveland Heights is hosting a meeting Monday morning for business owners and residents on Cedar and South Taylor roads to continue discussions about improving the area.  City officials from both Cleveland Heights and University Heights have met with local merchants a few times since December, brainstorming ideas to create and brand a Cedar-Taylor business district, much like its neighbors Coventry, Cedar Fairmount and Cedar Lee. Beautifying the area by installing art in vacant windows, planting flowers, recruiting volunteers to help pick up trash and adding benches were just a few ideas thrown out at the meetings.  Police chiefs from Cleveland Heights and University Heights also attended a meeting in February to address safety…

I agree with Henry, having lived at Noble/Monticello for the past 16 years. It has become increasingly pathetic and no attention EVER seems to be directed toward our neighborhood. Any energy spent on Noble/Nela is great - it is certainly needed there - but Noble/Monticello is perpetually neglected.   more ›

Martini Skate and Snow Set to Open Next to Melt in March

The shop will carry equipment for snowboarding, skating, apparel and other merchandise

Most people imagine olives soaking in a fancy glass full of liquor when they hear the word “martini.” But when naming his business Martini Skate and Snow, set to open on Cedar and South Taylor roads the first week of March, Mike Tirpak found out the word “martini” meant something different. “When I was trying to think of a name for the shop, I wanted something clever that sounded more sophisticated than Joe Schmoe’s skateboard shop,” said Tirpak, 35, who opened the first location on the border of Macedonia and Northfield about four years ago. “I Wikipediaed the word ‘martini,’ and found information about the ancient festival in Latvia in November to celebrate the coming of winter, which included sledding.” Martini Skate and Snow will sell …
