CH-UH Will Discuss Long-Term Lease Of Millikin With Mosdos

Karen Jones, CH-UH School Board president, said this is the first option that will be made available to Mosdos Ohr Hatorah.

CH-UH School Board president Karen Jones announced at Tuesday night's school board work session that the district will discuss a long-term lease of Millikin with Mosdos Ohr Hatorah. The board met in executive session at 6 p.m. before the regularly scheduled work session at 7 p.m. at Wiley Middle School. Jones had said at a meeting Monday night that the board would consider putting the former Millikin School, which has been vacant since 2006, up for public auction. Instead, the board decided to "initiate entering into negotiations of a long-term lease," Jones said. "This is the first option that will be made available," Jones said. "(A public auction) is not off the table." Alan Rapoport, a former Cleveland Heights mayor who represents …

Mr. Brooks I am not quite sure why you are slandering "old" people, yet say you "remember when." Mr. Brooks, I bought my house in 2004 and it is not worth what I paid for it. If you are interested in organic gardening then go out and plant an organic garden. Have you gone to City Hall and even proposed such an idea? As for "haste makes waste;...that building has sat vacant for more than a couple …   more ›

CH-UH Board Requests New Appraisal for Millikin

Board members set an executive session Monday night to discuss the property

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board discussed the possibility of selling the former Millikin School property at a meeting last night and decided to request a new appraisal. The executive session, closed to the public, was set specifically to discuss district property and was not a regularly scheduled meeting. The appraisal will assess both the school building and the Severance-Millikin barn. "The appraisal will be based on the best use of the land under current zoning code," district officials wrote in a press release. "Once Superintendent Douglas Heuer receives the appraisal, the board will then determine the path forward with the property, which may well include putting the property up for public auction. The board …

Isn't there something in the law about sales somewhere that when a school is sold, other schools have priority - first right of refusal? There is a tradition of education in that building. There are many good reasons, such as mentioned in the article, like stablity, property values, safety, that speak to the sale to a school. Certainly that would maintain the tradtion of excellence in education …   more ›

Plain Dealer Editorial Board: CH-UH Should Sell Millikin. Do You Agree?

"Why the district would want to hold on to the sprawling brick building, tucked into a neighborhood of single-family homes in Cleveland Heights, is a mystery," the Plain Dealer Editorial Board wrote

The Plain Dealer published an editorial Sunday that urges the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board to "seriously consider" selling the former Millikin School. The CH-UH school building that once housed a elementary and preschool closed in 2006 due to low enrollment and has been vacant since. Mosdos Ohr Hatorah sent proposals to buy the building a few times, and most recently offered the district $550,000. District officials contend that the building was appraised at $2.4 million in 2005, and Mosdos' price is not fair. They'd rather lease the building until the market stabilizes to ensure that the district and taxpayers get the best value, and said they offered that option to Mosdos. “… we remain firmly committed to ensuring …

Letter to the Editor: CH-UH Schools Should Get New Appraisal For Millikin

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board should sell the property to Mosdos Ohr Hatorah, which plans to invest millions in renovations and repairs, says Susan Efroymson. Take our poll and tell us what you think.

Dear Editor: The Board of Education response to Mosdos has been disheartening. Mosdos has given a fair market value offer and the board cites rumored suspicion that Mosdos has ulterior motives as reason to ignore it. Mosdos Boys division is bursting at the seams. It has offices in corners. It has a classroom on the stage which is no longer usable as a stage anymore. It has tutoring going on beneath coats in corners of the hall. And it has no plans to use the property for anything other than the school. The Millikin property, if sold to Mosdos, would serve as elbow room for the boys and an opportunity strengthen the neighborhood. They have no plan for residential property and never did. What it does have plans to do is revitalize the area …

UPDATED About 300 Crowd CH-UH School Board Meeting Over Millikin Controversy

City Councilman Jason Stein demands School Board Sell Millikin School to open a Jewish Orthodox School; School Board will discuss putting property up for public auction

Updated at 3 p.m. Wednesday The majority of the 300 people who packed Wiley Middle School’s auditorium Tuesday night sent a very clear message to the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board: They want the vacant Millikin School to be reopened as a new school. The community controversy over the Millikin School, which was closed in 2006 because of low enrollment, has been brewing for months. But it came to a boiling point in early February when residents heard rumors there was a call center moving in, and Cleveland Heights Economic Development Director Howard Thompson said that an out-of-state company was interested in leasing the property. A group of residents who live in the Millikin School neighborhood told the CH-UH School …

Of course they need to think about the best interests of the school district. I fail to see however how ruining a neighborhood can possibly be in the best interests of the district. Honestly, would you be as enthusiastic about someone putting a call center in your backyard? Further destabilizing a neighborhood and giving families yet another reason to leave can not possibly be of benefit to the …   more ›

Hundreds Turn Out for CH-UH School Board Meeting

Residents who want Mosdos Ohr Hatorah at the now vacant Millikin School spoke to school board officials. Come back soon for highlights from the meeting

Editor's Note: This article was originally published at 12:35 p.m. Tuesday and was updated. Tuesday night's Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board meeting was moved to Wiley Middle School, which is right next door to the Board of Education. There were hundreds of people there Tuesday night to talk about the future of the now vacant Millikin School, which closed in 2006. Residents of the Millikin neighborhood and parents who send their children to Mosdos Ohr Hatorah would like the board to consider or negotiate the offer from Mosdos to purchase the school for $550,000. District officials have said the offer is too low, as the school was appraised for $2.4 million in 2005, and have offered to lease the space to Mosdos. Here's what…

Council, Board Respond to Residents Who Want Mosdos at Millikin

Cleveland Heights City Council wants the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board to have a meeting with council and/or Millikin residents

Cleveland Heights Mayor Ed Kelley has sent a letter dated Feb. 22 to the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board urging members to meet with council and/or residents of the Millikin neighborhood. The night before at the Cleveland Heights City Council meeting, Kelley said more than 200 residents came to share their concerns and comments about the future of the former Millikin School, owned by the CH-UH City School District. This prompted him to send the letter, and some members showed support for the residents.  Residents said the board would not let them speak at the special board meeting that same night, and that school officials have not been open to negotiation and discussions about Millikin. They'd like Mosdos Ohr Hatorah, a …

Nethaniel, besides for eating the lies, I really disagree that this is a jewish community issue. As a resident of the area, I am very concerned as to what will become of the land and building that now sit vacant and vandalized. I am concerned to let my children walk by their unattended. Quite frankly, if a Catholic school that served local neighbors wanted to buy the property and use it as a …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: School Board, Reconsider Mosdos at Millikin

A letter to the editor from Susan Efroymson

Dear Editor: Tonight representatives of the Millikin neighborhood turned out at the School Board Planning Session carrying signs urging the sale of property to a local private school, Mosdos Ohr Hatorah. They had a robust turnout despite the change in time of the meeting but even more impressive were the throngs that turned out in City Hall urging Cleveland Heights Council not to rezone the area for commercial use perserving the neighborhood as residential and the building with it's long tradition of fine education for children playing and learning. Mosdos has promised to revitalize the playground for all the residents use. Mosdos has offered what is provably fair market value offer. In fact it was characterized as generous. Yet School …

Letter to the Editor: Millikin, The Vacant Anchor of Our Neighborhood

A letter to the editor from Cleveland Heights resident Akiva Feinstein

Dear Editor: It has been six years and the future of Millikin School in Cleveland Heights remains unsettled. The local Jewish community and Mosdos Schools have approached the Ch-UH School Board but have received no real response, just a stubborn insistence that the property is worth an amount that is not even in the realm of reality. Mosdos is not looking for a handout, just an open process. Millikin School was made from the outset to be a school set deeply into a neighborhood.  A good school in our community will guarantee a strong neighborhood for generations to come, and is the most proven way to keep people there. This current situation is an opportunity for the CH-UH School Board to show that their duty and interest is in helping …

Council Shows Support For Residents Who Want Mosdos at Millikin

Cleveland Heights Mayor Ed Kelley said the CH-UH School District should schedule a special meeting to hear from people who want Mosdos Ohr Hatorah at the former Millikin building

As people walked into Cleveland Heights City Council Chambers Tuesday night, it was clear why the room was filled with more than 100 people. Children held up signs that read “Sell Millikin to Mosdos.” The neighbors that live near the vacant Millikin School, owned by the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District, attended the council meeting to voice their concern that the district won't to sell the building to Mosdos Ohr Hatorah. The K-12 private Orthodox Jewish has offered to buy the building for $550,000, and residents say the board has not given Mosdos a fair shot to negotiate or further discuss the offer. Although Mayor Ed Kelley said he could not officially take a side on the issue, he did say he would have the city …

The NEWS RELEASE dated November 27 2012 released by the School Board on the week of February 29th 2012 showed nothing but contempt for the residents of the Millikin area and the Mosdos Ohr Hatorah. Then the board proceeds to accuse Mosdos of being …   more ›
