Heights Arts Director Peggy Spaeth Wins Cleveland Arts Prize

Spaeth will receive the Martha Joseph Prize, which is given to individuals or organizations who have contributed to the arts in Northeast Ohio

Heights Arts Director Peggy Spaeth has accomplished so much during the last 13 years. She has been executive director of the organization since it was founded in 2000. Heights Arts President Sharon Grossman previously described it as "13 years of fine art, the written word, public art, poet laureates, signs, benches, openings, murals, street concerts, home concerts, fund raisers, fun raisers, collaborations and installations." And, for her hard work, Spaeth will receive a Cleveland Arts Prize this June 27 at the Cleveland Museum of Art. More specifically, Spaeth has won the Martha Joseph Prize, which is given to individuals or organizations who have contributed to the arts in Northeast Ohio. She will be joined by an impressive roster of …

New Heights Arts Director Announced

Rachel Bernstein comes to Heights Arts from the Music Settlement

Heights Arts has hired a new director. Rachel Bernstein, who will replace outgoing director Peggy Spaeth July 2, has experience as a performance artist, educator and administrator, Spaeth said. “Which is a nicely rounded experience for someone who will be working in a small grassroots organization,” she added. Spaeth said that Bernstein, who has worked at the Cleveland Music Settlement for 15 years, plays the cello and teaches cello, displays a passion and vision for connecting arts to the community. “This isn’t just a job,” she added. “We’re a nonprofit and we’re very mission-driven. This is the kind of place where you put your heart and soul into it." “Her compassionate experience in overseeing programs and systems, coupled with her …

Heights Arts could have its new executive director by April.  Sharon Grosman, president of the Board of Trustees, said Friday that they have "had a good number of applicants" and they are conducting initial phone interviews. Then they will advance the process into personal interviews with the Board of Trustees members. Grosman said they are still accepting applications. "We still want people to apply because we want to very best person to apply," she said. The current executive director, Peggy Spaeth, announced on Jan. 17 that she would be stepping down after 13 years to explore other projects. "Retiring has a connotation that you're ending something," Spaeth told Cleveland Heights Patch. "I'm making a transition in my life. I haven't …

Peggy Spaeth Steps Down as Heights Arts Executive Director

Spaeth said she is moving on to explore other projects

Peggy Spaeth has confirmed that she will soon leave Heights Arts, where she had been executive director since the organization was founded in 2000. "I've got some other projects I'd like to explore," she said Thursday morning. "I've been doing it for 13 years, so I figured I'd pass it along." The Heights Arts Board of Trustees first announced Spaeth's departure Thursday morning in a news release from President Sharon Grossman. The organization will conduct a search to find Spaeth's replacement. "It’s hard for me to believe that Peggy is stepping down from the helm — but she has a few other things she wants to achieve in this lifetime," Grossman said. Heights Arts Holiday Store Offers Locally Made Gift Options

Open through Dec. 30, Heights Arts will sell ornaments, cards, jewelry and CDs by local artists

The Heights Arts Holiday Store is back for an 11th year, and executive director Peggy Spaeth believes 2012 marks the best edition yet to hit the organization's Lee Road gallery. "Every year is the best," she said. "There's a lot of things we don't carry year-round. We have more stock, more arts and crafts than we normally do." Though it's considered one of six Heights Arts galleries each year, the organization pushes it as a retail option to promote local shopping for local products. "We want the message to be loud and clear that you should come shop for local art for the holidays," Spaeth said. "It's like blatant commercialism. If you're going to buy something, buy something handmade by a professional artist who lives right here at home…

Heights Arts Launches Its Sixth Season of Chamber Music Concerts

Series features Cleveland Orchestra musicians playing in unique, intimate settings

Attending a concert by the Cleveland Orchestra is always a notable event. But when some of those exceptional musicians play music of their own selection in a more intimate and casual environment, the experience can be engaging in an entirely different way. This is what attendees to the Heights Arts’ chamber music concert series have discovered in past years. And the group’s new four-concert series, its sixth season, is slated to begin this Sunday, Oct. 2, with a performance titled “Welcome Bach Tudor Arms” in the Crystal Room of the recently renovated Doubletree Tudor Arms Hotel on Carnegie. Peggy Spaeth, executive director of Heights Arts, notes that these chamber music concerts have a unique twist. “The artistic director of the series, …

Video: Heights Arts Showcases Local Architecture Firms in New Space

The 'Building Below the Radar' exhibit opened in June and will showcase the work of three Cleveland-based architecture firms until July 23

Heights Arts opened its newly expanded space June 10 with a new exhibit, Building Below the Radar, which showcases the work of Cleveland-based architecture firms.  One of the most recognizable projects was from the firm studioTECHNE, which redesigned the Lee Road Library, the main branch of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library. The firm also designed the installation in the gallery — boxes framing photos of work from the different architects hang from the ceiling. At night, the photos glow. Other featured architects are Kordalski Architects, Inc. and Anthony Paskevich & Associates.  As part of the exhibit, the organization is offering a free series of discussions called "Radar Reports." The first was a curator and …
