City responds to Ohio Supreme Court decision; developer First Interstate Properties has asked the court to reconsider
South Euclid City Council voted at its regular meeting Monday night to put the former Oakwood Country Club rezoning issue on the November ballot. Council members approved the emergency resolution unanimously on its first reading, and it goes into effect immediately. City spokesman Keith Benjamin said he was going to submit the petitions and paperwork necessary to get the referendum on the Nov. 8 ballot to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections today. The decision comes as a result of last week’s Ohio Supreme Court ruling. The court voted 6-1 to direct the city of South Euclid to either repeal the ordinance that granted rezoning or allow voters to decide what happens to the more than 60 acres of land. The former country club is zoned for …

Citizens For Oakwood challenged South Euclid City Council's decision to reject the referendum petition in August, and the court ruled in the group's favor
The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled 6-1 in favor of a group trying to stop developers from building on the former Oakwood Country Club land. The court announced today that it agreed with Citizens For Oakwood, which is made up of residents from South Euclid and Cleveland Heights, that South Euclid voters should decide whether the land is rezoned. The court has directed South Euclid to put the decision on the November ballot or repeal the decision to rezone the property. South Euclid City Council unanimously approved the rezoning on June 27 so that developer First Interstate Properties, which bought 62 acres of the Oakwood land that falls within South Euclid in December, could build there. The land was previously zoned for residential property…

Developers want to build "Oakwood Commons" on the former country club land
South Euclid City Council will likely vote tonight on whether to rezone the former Oakwood Country Club property from residential to commercial so that developers can build there. The rezoning was requested by First Interstate Properties, which wants to develop a mix of retail, residential and parkland at the site called Oakwood Commons. About 60 acres of country club land that falls within South Euclid was purchased by the company late last year. The South Euclid Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend rezoning Oakwood April 14. City Council scheduled a public meeting May 25 and heard from South Euclid and Cleveland Heights residents. The majority of those who spoke were against the plan. Now the decision is in council's …

Majority opposed to rezoning former Oakwood Country Club property
Fifty-three South Euclid residents made their voices heard before City Council Wednesday night at a public hearing on the proposed rezoning of land at the site of the shuttered Oakwood Country Club. It was a far cry from the last public hearing held on the matter in March, when Cleveland Heights residents came out in droves and dominated the conversation. Only 19 Cleveland Heights residents spoke Wednesday night. Although the numbers increased, the result was similar to the last hearing — the majority of South Euclid residents who spoke, an estimated 26, were against rezoning the land from residential to commercial so that a retail center called Oakwood Commons can be built there. Nineteen came out in favor, while the rest simply asked …

Public hearing before City Council to be scheduled
The South Euclid Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend rezoning the former Oakwood Country Club property from residential to commercial. The issue now falls into the lap of City Council, which is expected to schedule a public hearing about the rezoning in the coming weeks before taking a vote of its own. The rezoning was requested by First Interstate Properties, which wants to develop a mix of retail, residential and parkland at the site called Oakwood Commons. About 60 acres of country club land that falls within South Euclid was purchased by the company late last year. The company, which has also developed Legacy Village and Steelyard Commons, among others, plans to buy another 92 acres of club land that falls within …

Public hearing before the full council to be scheduled in the coming weeks
The South Euclid Planning Commission will vote Thursday on whether to recommend that the City Council rezone the former Oakwood Country Club property. City Council will then hold a public hearing on the issue in the coming weeks and use opinions from those who speak there, as well as the Planning Commission’s recommendation, when they vote on the change. The city has been asked to change the zoning from residential to commercial so that First Interstate Properties, a development company known for building Legacy Village, Steelyard Commons and Avon Commons, among others, can build a mix of residential and commercial property, as well as parkland, called Oakwood Commons. The company has already purchased 60 acres of land that falls within …

So far they will not sell for $5million but maybe tomorrow. I believe all will work out for all parties including Mitchel Schneider whom I have met with and believe he will act with all parties best interests. Wonder why he was not involved with Cedar Center from the start, seems to be better able to get tenants in South Euclid than anyone I know and his record speaks for itself. I thank him for …   more ›
