Small Business Development Center to relocate to space adjacent to future Heights Knowledge and Innovation Center
The Cleveland Heights Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will move to the Lee Road branch of the Heights Library. The move will give entrepreneurs easy access to the technology and resources the library provides, said spokesperson Sheryl Banks, including the upcoming Heights Knowledge and Innovation Center (HKIC). The SBDC and HKIC will open in the second floor of the Arts Center, where Dobama Theatre is located. HKIC will be a computer lab with iPad rental, study rooms, software for music, movies and graphic design, a resource room with business and technology books and magazines and more. Banks called the SBDC, run by Cleveland State University and the City of Cleveland Heights, and library's partnership ideal: "Entrepreneurs and …
Steve Presser discusses the ways in which federal budget negotiations affect small business owners
Steve Presser, the owner of the Big Fun toy store on Coventry, isn't just a small business proprietor. He's an advocate for all small business owners. Presser recently spoke with Marketplace -- a national business news program produced and distributed by American Public Media -- about how the federal budget negotiations could affect small business owners. "You know, health care, all the big buzz words affect the small business owners just like it affects the big one," Presser told Marketplace's Kai Ryssdal. Presser also said Congress was "not listening enough" to Main Street small business owners. However, overall, Presser noticed that business has improved at his store in recent years. Presser has been a guest on Marketplace before. They …

Show your support for the Lee Road store this Friday.
Flash mobs seem to be a thing of the past. The newest craze is "cash mobs" — organized events where people are encouraged to shop at and support a locally owned store. A "cash mob" hit Coventry in February. The crowd of about 50 people filled Big Fun and spent $1,454 in just an hour and 15 minutes. Revive, a store that sells fair trade items in Cleveland Heights and in Legacy Village, is hoping for the same success this Friday. FutureHeights is organizing this cash mob at the Cleveland Heights store, which sells scarves, clothes, jewelry, hats, kitchen and home decor and more made by artisans from about 30 countries. The Revive cash mob is set for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30. People are asked to bring at least $20 to spend. Owner Lisa…

Proceeds from raffle tickets, available for purchase at many local businesses, raise money for scholarships for students interested in law enforcement and criminal justice.
Cleveland Heights residents and businesses have once again joined forces to honor fallen Cleveland Heights Officer Jason D. West. West was protecting people he didn’t know when he was shot and killed in May 2007. He was responding to a fight on Altamont Avenue — a routine call — and was shot as he was getting out of his car. The 31-year-old was risking his life not for family or friends, but for strangers, as all police officers are asked to do. In response to this tragedy, Lita Gonzalez, a stranger to west, established a scholarship fund for students in the law enforcement and criminal justice program and Cleveland Heights High School. Since 2008, she and a committee have selected one graduating senior who receives $500 toward any college…

Cleveland Heights Mayor Ed Kelley announced at Monday's CH-UH School Board meeting that Douglas Katz plans to open a delicatessen/diner and expand his catering establishment.
New: Fire Food & Drink Owner Plans to Bring Back 1950s Charm to Lee Road Diner Cars Updated at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday When Fifth Third Bank took ownership of the nostalgic pair of diner cars on Lee Road in Cleveland Heights, the future of the property seemed uncertain. A handful of restaurant owners had tried their luck on the stainless steel cars, and businesses met untimely deaths. But Mayor Ed Kelley believes the new owner can turn things around. Kelley announced at the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board meeting Monday that Douglas Katz, owner of Fire Food & Drink in Shaker Square, is going to purchase the property with help from the city. "I think it fits in perfectly (in the area.) We as the city and the Cedar Lee Business…

Julia and Victor Nimmons want to use the money they raise at the Lee Road store to feed the hungry and open a cultural center.
Julia’s Creations on Lee Road sells hand-made jewelry, organic soaps and a collection of purses, hats, scarves, clothes and more. But what customers may not know about the store, which opened in May, is how the owners are using the profits from the shop. The husband and wife team, Victor and Julia Nimmons, also operate God’s Work Inc., a non-profit with the mission to raise money to feed the hungry and open a cultural center where people of any means can take classes from dancing to anti-bullying to drama to jewelry making. “I wanted to reach for my passion,” said Victor, who left his job with the MetroHealth system in March 2011 and has owned his own business in the past. “All efforts are established to support the world we can envision …

I don't know how these are paid for or if it would cost me money as a citizen of CH but it doesn't sound like a bad idea. I was interested in this a couple years ago when they first arrived to the heights. What does something like this center cost to use?   more ›
