Husband and Wife Team Pour Passions Into Julia's Creations

Julia and Victor Nimmons want to use the money they raise at the Lee Road store to feed the hungry and open a cultural center.

Julia’s Creations on Lee Road sells hand-made jewelry, organic soaps and a collection of purses, hats, scarves, clothes and more. But what customers may not know about the store, which opened in May, is how the owners are using the profits from the shop. The husband and wife team, Victor and Julia Nimmons, also operate God’s Work Inc., a non-profit with the mission to raise money to feed the hungry and open a cultural center where people of any means can take classes from dancing to anti-bullying to drama to jewelry making. “I wanted to reach for my passion,” said Victor, who left his job with the MetroHealth system in March 2011 and has owned his own business in the past. “All efforts are established to support the world we can envision …

Deed To Lee Road Dining Cars Transferred to Bank

Favor Bistro closed at the end of May, and the owners of the historic dining cars have given up on the property and transferred the deed to Fifth Third Bank.

A handful of restaurant owners have tried their luck on the pair of nostalgic dining cars on Lee Road. And yet another business has failed. Favor Bistro, which opened just a year ago at 1975 Lee Road, closed at the end of May. Now the future of the stainless steel dining cars, brought to Cleveland Heights from the east coast by Big Fun owner Steve Presser about a decade ago, lies with Fifth Third Bank. Father and son Pat and Chris Tsilianidis said they have owned the property for the past eight years and watched as eateries, including their own, met untimely deaths. Pat Tsilianidis estimates he’s lost more than a million dollars on the property. “But that’s business. You have to move on,” he said. Chris Tsilianidis said they recently …

I recall the place being an ice box in the winter, when you sat near an exterior wall. Parking is not very adequate. Food eateries have come and gone in the Cedar-Lee area. But the bottom line is food quality and service. A great example is Big Al's Diner on Larchmere. The service is attentive. The quantity and quality of the food I have eaten there is exceptional. If you have a good product, …   more ›

Names in the News: Dawn Quintana

She owns Quintana's Barber & Dream Spa with her husband, Alex, but here are a few things you may not know about her.

Name & Occupation: Dawn Quintana, small business owner. How long have you lived and worked in Cleveland Heights? November will be three years that I’ve been living in Cleveland Heights so about two-and-a-half years. We’ve had the business in Cleveland Heights for 11 years. What do you like most about this community? The support for having a business. I mean everyone, the clients are so embracing, and the city has been so gracious to work with us, and the nonprofits, they’ve really helped to embrace our business and support us. They really want you to succeed. Our customers are great about that, too. And especially the city planning department has been really helpful. They helped us to envision our sign and the storefront renovation —  they…

Visions for Vacancies: Borders At Severance

What would you like to see in the space at Severance Town Center?

The old Borders in Severance Town Center is still vacant. According to an article published in The Plain Dealer Sept. 7, 2010, the store opened in February 2000 and shuttered Oct. 2, 2010. Cleveland Heights Mayor Ed Kelley said the company that owns Severance, Pine Tree Commercial Realty, LLC, is optimistic that something will fill the space soon, but for now we want your ideas. If you could pick a store or restaurant, what would it be? Do you have other suggestions for the property? Tell us your choice in the comments below. If we receive a lot, we'll collect them all and republish them with a poll. PREVIOUS VISIONS FOR VACANCIES: Visions for Vacancies: What Should Replace Walmart? Simply Charming Coming Back to Cedar Lee

The greeting card, handbag, candle and jewelry shop will open soon in its former home with new items for men, babies, kids and pets.

Simply Charming is coming back to the Cedar Lee Business District. Elisabeth Gevelber closed her store in 2009 when she thought she was going to move to Arizona. She ended up staying in town and two years later, relocated to Warrensville Center Road in University Heights. “I thought, the space is available and it had free parking and it gets a lot of traffic, but that never happened,” said Gevelber, who opened the store in September and closed it June 9. Loyal customers from Cedar Lee came to the greeting card, jewelry, handbag and candle shop, but it was difficult to attract new customers. So Gevelber decided to move back home. “These were my old stomping grounds. We’d always spend Saturday with grandma,” said Gevelber, recalling memories…

New Gelato And Pizza Shop Now Open in Former La Gelateria Space

Vero Bistro wants to bring Italian favorites back to the Cedar Fairmount Business District — with a new twist.

A popular pizza and gelato shop that closed last year has been replaced by a, well, pizza and gelato shop.  The owner, Cleveland Heights resident Marc-Auréle Buholzer, worked for La Gelateria in the Cedar Fairmount Business District off and on for many years. The experience inspired him to create his own store, and he opened Monday, June 11. “The community loved this place,” he said. But he says he offers something a little different. The restaurant, Vero, which means true or real in Italian, will stay open year-round, all the time. Buholzer, 28, has redecorated the interior to look more like a café or bistro and added more tables. He covered the light blue walls with olive and rust tones. He also serves a specific type of pizza — …

Cleveland Heights Resident Creates Cards To Prompt Conversation In Difficult Moments

Neil Slobin created Sweet Memories, a deck of cards with questions and sentimental photos meant to bring people together during tough times.

Neil Slobin isn’t used to running out of things to say. The lifelong Cleveland Heights resident likes a good conversation and telling stories. But in 2008, when he went to visit his friend’s mother who had moved to a nursing home, he froze. “She was so depressed and so aggravated to be there, and I’m pretty sure she knew her time was drawing near. When I went to visit her one of those times, she did not want to talk,” said Slobin, who went to see her three or four times a week and said they were extremely close. “I left after probably 15 minutes. There was nothing to say.” He felt terrible. While driving home, he had an idea. What if he had a prompt, questions to ask her during those awkward moments? Something more than, “What did you eat …

Both of my parents died in nursing homes. I wish I had these cards so my visits would have been less uncomfortable. Also wish I had these cards then so I could have learned more about my parents before it was too late.   more ›

McNulty's Moves Out, Burgers-N-Beer To Move In

Council approved a loan to help Burgers-N-Beer establish a restaurant on Coventry Road.

A new restaurant will soon move into the space formerly occupied by McNulty's Pub on Coventry Road. City Council approved a $60,000 loan to help Burgers-N-Beer establish a store at 1854 Coventry, and Mayor Ed Kelley said the business could open as early as July or August. Burgers-N-Beer, which also has a restaurant in Willoughby, will bring 11 full-time jobs and 10 part-time jobs. At least 51 percent of the full-time equivalent positions must be dedicated for people with low to moderate incomes, according to council documents. The menu includes sandwiches, salads, sweet potato fries, wings, ribs and of course, burgers. According to its website, the restaurant opened in 1999. The money comes from the city's Commercial Revolving Loan Fund …
