Members of Cleveland Heights swimming and diving teams happily splashed in the water at Cumberland Pool on Wednesday evening at the annual water show. About 60 young people flipped from diving boards and executed synchronized swimming routines to music from countries around the world.

In the blur of a meet, high school swimmers race against each other — and the clock

On the basketball court or the football field or the soccer pitch, your opponent is obvious. You always want to beat the other team. You want to do the same thing in the pool, of course, but for swimmers, opponents are less clearly defined. When you dive in, you want to touch the wall before your opponents, but you also want to touch the wall first. That means you want to beat your own teammates. And the clock. And that was what Stedman Smith wanted to do Tuesday night. Smith is a junior on the Cleveland Heights High School swimming and diving team. He is tall and lean and fast, and he is getting faster.
