Cedar Taylor Merchants, Neighbors to Meet Again Monday

Next week's meeting is one of several that have been scheduled to discuss improving the business district

The city of Cleveland Heights is hosting a meeting Monday morning for business owners and residents on Cedar and South Taylor roads to continue discussions about improving the area.  City officials from both Cleveland Heights and University Heights have met with local merchants a few times since December, brainstorming ideas to create and brand a Cedar-Taylor business district, much like its neighbors Coventry, Cedar Fairmount and Cedar Lee. Beautifying the area by installing art in vacant windows, planting flowers, recruiting volunteers to help pick up trash and adding benches were just a few ideas thrown out at the meetings.  Police chiefs from Cleveland Heights and University Heights also attended a meeting in February to address safety…

I agree with Henry, having lived at Noble/Monticello for the past 16 years. It has become increasingly pathetic and no attention EVER seems to be directed toward our neighborhood. Any energy spent on Noble/Nela is great - it is certainly needed there - but Noble/Monticello is perpetually neglected.   more ›

Martini Skate and Snow Set to Open Next to Melt in March

The shop will carry equipment for snowboarding, skating, apparel and other merchandise

Most people imagine olives soaking in a fancy glass full of liquor when they hear the word “martini.” But when naming his business Martini Skate and Snow, set to open on Cedar and South Taylor roads the first week of March, Mike Tirpak found out the word “martini” meant something different. “When I was trying to think of a name for the shop, I wanted something clever that sounded more sophisticated than Joe Schmoe’s skateboard shop,” said Tirpak, 35, who opened the first location on the border of Macedonia and Northfield about four years ago. “I Wikipediaed the word ‘martini,’ and found information about the ancient festival in Latvia in November to celebrate the coming of winter, which included sledding.” Martini Skate and Snow will sell …

Beautifying the area with flowers, murals and benches among suggestions to market and brand the district

About 25 city officials, business owners and representatives from local nonprofits gathered at Melt Bar & Grilled on Monday morning to discuss how to improve and market a Cedar and Taylor roads business district. Mayors Ed Kelley and Susan Infeld as well as the police chiefs from both Cleveland Heights and University Heights attended. Howard Thompson, economic development director for Cleveland Heights, started the meeting by summarizing concerns and ideas at the last meeting. Business owners had said that lighting, parking and crime were hurdles to developing the area. Thompson said the city was conducting studies and working on improving lighting in the area.  Conversations and ideas ping-ponged from one person to another the entire …

Kevin: I would like nothing more than to be proven wrong. I love that area in Cleveland Heights and would love more small independent businesses that add a personality to the Heights. I think Cleveland has a great mix of creative and talented business owners, young enough to infuse some excitement back into this city. Now if the banks will take a chance I think everyone would be rewarded. I have …   more ›
