Janine Boyd To Be Appointed To Vacant City Council Seat

Boyd will replace councilwoman Phyllis Evans, who resigned in May.

Janine Boyd is following in her mother's footsteps. Cleveland Heights City Council announced today that they will appoint the 40-year-old lifelong Cleveland Heights resident to fill the council seat vacated by former member Phyllis Evans, and a seat once held by Boyd's mother. Barbara Boyd (D-Cleveland), who is now a state representative in District 9, was the first African American councilperson elected in Cleveland Heights. She was elected in 1983 and served until the end of 1992, when she was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives. Evans was then appointed to take over for Barbara Boyd and served for nearly 20 years, up until she resigned in May at the beginning of a term she had just won re-election to in November 2011. And …

Severance Towers Voters Moved Back To Original Polling Location

The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections made this and other changes to Cleveland Heights polling locations.

The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections had planned to eliminate three polling locations in Cleveland Heights before the November 2012 election — Severance Towers, Oxford Elementary School and Boulevard Elementary School. Oxford and Boulevard are still off the list, but voters in precinct 4G at Severance Towers will stay there and not move to Cleveland Heights City Hall as planned. Severance Towers voters were already notified that their polling location had changed, as were folks in the Oxford and Boulevard precincts. A representative from the Board of Elections said in July that the BOE would mail another card to residents about the change, but people may be confused. Voters who cast their ballots Oxford will go to Caledonia Elementary …

Cleveland Heights City Council Search: 20 Apply For Vacant Seat

Cleveland Heights reopened the search for the seat vacated by Phyllis Evans' resignation and received more applications.

Cleveland Heights Mayor Ed Kelley announced today that 20 people are now vying for the vacant Cleveland Heights City Council seat. Council decided to reopen its search in August after it determined that former Councilwoman Phyllis Evans, who resigned in May, would not be considered for the position. Evans, 67, applied for the role she left, hoping that she would be able to continue to receive her benefits from the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System and regain the spot she held on council for nearly 20 years. “We decided to reopen the search based on the fact that many people told us that they would have applied, but they thought that Phyllis was going to get the position," Kelley said in an interview in August. Kelley had said that …

New Cleveland Heights Fire Chief Honored At Ceremony

Lt. William "Dave" Freeman was sworn in as chief at City Hall Monday night.

New Cleveland Heights Fire Chief William "Dave" Freeman says firefighters aren't just courageous when they sign up for the job. They show bravery every time they start a shift. "I thought about all of the people that we've cared for over the years. People that we've saved and people who we couldn't save," said Freeman, 46, after his swearing-in ceremony at Cleveland Heights City Hall Monday night. "It's so important to know what these guys go through every day. Even their families don't know because they don't talk about it." That's what Freeman said he was thinking about while giving a speech at the ceremony. He stopped several times, overcome with emotion, and jokingly told his staff standing nearby to not remember that moment.  "My job …

Cleveland Heights City Council Unanimously Approves Millikin Lease Proposal

The city, CH-UH School Board and Mosdos Ohr Hatorah have now all approved the lease proposal, a non-binding agreement that spells out some of the details of a possible lease before the actual document is drafted.

Cleveland Heights City Council unanimously approved a lease proposal for the former Millikin School at its regular meeting Monday, Aug. 20. The proposal was drafted by lawyers representing Mosdos Ohr Hatorah, the Orthodox Jewish School that has consistently shown interest in the building and offered to purchase it, and the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District, which owns the property. The non-binding agreement is meant to spell out some of the details of a possible lease before an actual lease is drafted to make sure all interested parties are on the same page. One of the terms is that the school would be leased to the city, and Cleveland Heights would sublease to Mosdos. Councilman Jason Stein thanked Mosdos officials and …
