Parents Talk Q&A: Restructuring of Heights High Small Schools

What do you think about the upcoming changes at Cleveland Heights High School?

Each week the Cleveland Heights Parents Council will answer a question on parenthood. Join the conversation by logging in and posting a comment or posing a question below. We'd love to hear from you. Last week, we posted a question asking parents what they thought about the changes at Heights High. Because we didn't hear from parents, we wanted to give everyone an opportunity to respond again.  This week's question is the same as last week's: What do you think about the upcoming changes to Heights High?  Mariya Ali: Overall, I am excited about the changes scheduled for implementation in the 2012-2013 school year. I agree with the effort to integrate the district's curriculum across all grade levels and to make the education our children …

Whiz Kid: Ajia Mason

Heights High senior takes charge as Social VP of her Class Council, and makes sure there is funding for school events like prom

Cleveland Heights Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Ajia Mason Ajia Mason likes getting things done and being in charge.  She had been in student government since the fourth grade, getting the class president nod in both the fifth and eighth grades, so when she decided to re-enter student politics as a senior, the position was obvious: Social vice president of her Class Council. She began her job almost immediately upon entering office. She coordinated school activities like homecoming, pep rallies and prom. She collected money for the events through fundraisers like bake sales, car washes and the annual fashion show, where local businesses donate clothes for students to wear while walking down the runway. “I just like being in charge of things…

Whiz Kid: Victoria Lewis

The ninth-grader is a finalist in the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage 'Stop the Hate: Youth Speak Out' essay contest

Cleveland Heights Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Victoria Lewis  When her English teacher asked her to write about a type of hate and what she would do to stop it, 14-year-old Victoria Lewis didn't pick bullying or discrimination.  Lewis was inspired to write about self-hate among teens after noticing that some girls her age had cuts on their arms.  Her teacher, Donna Feldman, asked the class to write an essay for the third annual essay contest sponsored by the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, Stop the Hate: Youth Speak Out. Lewis said she wrote the piece in the fall and was surprised to find out she was a finalist.  "I was excited at first because I really didn't plan on it — I forgot about it," said Lewis, a ninth-grader at the Mosaic …

CHUH School Board to Hear Plans for High School Next Year at Work Session

Principal and teacher reassignments at Cleveland Heights High School on the agenda tonight

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board will hear from high school officials tonight about principal and teacher reassignments and other changes at the small schools next year.  The regularly scheduled work session will be held at Wiley Middle School's Auditorium at 7 p.m.  Cleveland Heights High split into five small schools in 2004 and 2005 as part of the Ohio High School Transformation Initiative, and the hope was that student achievement, engagement and graduation rates would improve.  But school officials said results have not met their expectations. Students aren't taking all classes within their small schools, achievement has tapered off and about a quarter of freshmen have to repeat the ninth grade. The district …

Cleveland Heights Boys' Basketball Season Ends in District Play

No. 1 Garfield Heights downs Tigers, but not without a fight

A gleeful coach Sonny Johnson said last week his Garfield Heights team was going to have fun facing Cleveland Heights in the Division I district semifinals. Well, it sure didn’t look like it Wednesday night. Despite the trash talk and a final score that might indicate it was less of a contest than it actually was, the state’s No. 1 boys’ basketball team in Division I came away with a 59-40 victory over the Tigers that wasn’t truly secure until deep into the fourth quarter at Solon High School. With a quick burst to open the third, the Tigers drew within two points of the Bulldogs, but Garfield’s superior size, speed and skill put down the threat almost immediately. Nonetheless, Garfield Heights didn’t find itself with a comfortable 12-…
