Theater Review: 'A Steady Rain'

A cop melodrama at Dobama masterfully targets painful truths

Anyone who has watched even a modicum of television has seen enough police procedurals and cop-buddy duos to last several lifetimes. But that doesn’t mean this well-trodden genre is completely played out. Case in point: A Steady Rain by Keith Huff, now at Dobama Theatre. This is a play that feels gritty in all the right ways, delving into areas of friendship, loyalty and morality in ways that most behind-the-badge soap operas never touch. Preview: 'A Steady Rain' at Dobama

The dramatic play by Keith Huff poses a moral quandry for two Chicago cops

Police are often called upon to make many quick decisions, and sometimes the choices they make can haunt them forever. In the play A Steady Rain, scheduled to open at Dobama Theatre on Friday, the ripples from their decision are immense and tragic. The play gained some notoriety when it opened on Broadway in 2009 with film icons Daniel Craig (the current James Bond) and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine in X-Men) cast in the two starring roles. In the Dobama production, those characters will be played by popular local actor Scott Plate and a newcomer to the area, Jeremy Kendall.
