CH-UH Lay Facilities Committee Launches Website, Sets Next Meeting

The group will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at Gearity Professional Development School

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights Lay Facilities Committee has launched its website, chuhfacilities.org. The site provides more information about the committee, which has 27 members, meeting dates, minutes and more. The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at Gearity Professional Development School. The committee, created by the CH-UH School Board at the recommendation of FutureHeights and Reaching Heights, is to examine the facilities master plan and determine what aspects of the plan the community would support. Tips to Help Cleveland Heights-University Heights Tigers Succeed in Kindergarten

Local administrators and teachers share suggestions for parents to help their children succeed on the first day of school and beyond.

Kindergarten students across the state are packing their book bags and smiling for first-day photos as they get ready to enter elementary school for the first time. Kindergartners in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District have a staggered start, or three different official "first days," said Lisa Evans, a kindergarten teacher at Gearity Professional Development School. Her full class will share their second day in school, Sept. 5, but the class is divided up into three different groups that begin either Aug. 30, Aug. 31 or Sept. 4 to help them acclimate. Gearity PTA to Host Reception For Parents To Meet New Principal

Gearity Professional Development School has organized a welcome and information session for parents to meet the new principal, Dr. Michele Evans.

The Gearity Professional Development School PTA is inviting parents, children, staff and Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District residents to a reception to meet the new principal of the elementary school, Dr. Michele Evans. The event will be from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20 at Gearity school in University Heights. The free event is open to anyone who wants to learn more about Evans or the school, and the PTA will provide pizza and dessert. The PTA asks that those interested in attending RSVP to gearitypta@gmail.com.

A Third of CH-UH Schools Will Have New Leaders This Fall

The CH-UH School Board approved the appointment of three principals and the resignation of two at its meeting July 17. Here's a look at other changes for the 2012-2013 school year.

A third of the schools in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District will have new principals this fall. Gearity Professional Development School, Fairfax Elementary School, Boulevard Elementary School and Cleveland Heights High School will have new leaders. Out of 16 principal positions in 12 schools, five changed, one was removed and one was added. Most recently, the CH-UH School Board approved the appointments of three principals and the resignation of two at its meeting Tuesday night (July 17): The board also approved hiring administrative principal Johnetta Wiley to oversee the four small schools in Heights High at its meeting July 3. Fairfax Principal To Move To Educational Services Department

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District is looking for a new principal for the elementary school for the 2012-2013 school year.

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District announced today that Fairfax Elementary School Principal Michael Wasser was moving to an administration position in the district's educational services department. “By working in our educational services department, Mr. Wasser can contribute to our students’ educations in bigger ways,” said Superintendent Doug Heuer in the press release. “His experience working with McDonald School District’s continuous improvement plan and with federal government programs will serve our students well.” Wasser was formerly a superintendent in the McDonald district, according to the press release. Mr. Wasser was a breath of fresh air at Fairfax last year and he should not be forced to leave for a sham desk job. This needless change hurts the students and teachers at Fairfax and should be changed.   more ›

Beachwood Votes to Hire Gearity Principal

Sherry Miller will lead Hilltop Elementary School next year, says goodbye to Gearity Professional Development School families.

The principal of Gearity Professional Development School sent a letter to families Thursday announcing that she had accepted a job with the Beachwood City Schools. Today it was official. The Beachwood Board of Education approved hiring Sherry Miller as principal of Hilltop Elementary School at a special meeting this morning and called on Thursday. The vote was 4-0. One member, Mitchel Luxenburg, was absent. "She is a proven leader in the areas of curriculum, professional development, supervision and community relations," Beachwood Schools Superintendent Rich Markwardt wrote in a memo to the community this morning. Miller will replace Michael Molnar, who announced last month that he had accepted a job in Lorain County. Miller had worked at …

Gearity Professional Development School Principal Sherry Miller said in a letter to families that she has accepted a job with the Beachwood City Schools. The Beachwood board is expected to approve her hire today.

Updated 6:00 a.m. Friday The principal of Gearity Professional Development School sent a letter to families Thursday announcing that she was leaving to pursue a job with the Beachwood City Schools. The Beachwood City Schools Board of Education is expected to approve the staff's recommendation that the Gearity principal, Sherry Miller, be the next principal of Hilltop Elementary School at a special meeting Friday morning. "While it is not easy for me to leave Gearity, I leave knowing that we have accomplished a great deal together," wrote Miller, who has been principal of Gearity since 2004. CH-UH School Board Presented With 3 More Facilities Options

Steve Shergalis, CH-UH business services director, presented the new plans at a meeting Thursday night.

Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board members heard three more ideas for the proposed facilities master plan at a special meeting Thursday, May 24. In all three new options, Heights High would be renovated first and the only school worked on in the first phase, and the district would use two bond issues to pay for the project instead of one. Construction would stop for about four years between the first and second phases. In two options, there would be a primary school in University Heights. The new plans would push the project’s completion date to 2029 instead of 2022 as outlined in the first revised version Plan C. School Board To Consider Whether To Move Forward With Plan C As Is Or Make Changes

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board will meet at 6:30 Thursday to decide whether to make changes to the latest version of Plan C or consider the proposal as is at its next meeting.

Kal Zucker said he doesn’t max out his credit card, and he doesn’t want to max out the district’s, either. The Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board member expressed his concerns about the latest financing proposal for the district’s master plan at a meeting May 15. After more than four hours, board members couldn’t come to a consensus, and called a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Board of Education building to decide whether they will move forward with the master plan as is or ask for changes before the regular meeting June 5.
