Heights Arts Director Peggy Spaeth Wins Cleveland Arts Prize

Spaeth will receive the Martha Joseph Prize, which is given to individuals or organizations who have contributed to the arts in Northeast Ohio

Heights Arts Director Peggy Spaeth has accomplished so much during the last 13 years. She has been executive director of the organization since it was founded in 2000. Heights Arts President Sharon Grossman previously described it as "13 years of fine art, the written word, public art, poet laureates, signs, benches, openings, murals, street concerts, home concerts, fund raisers, fun raisers, collaborations and installations." And, for her hard work, Spaeth will receive a Cleveland Arts Prize this June 27 at the Cleveland Museum of Art. More specifically, Spaeth has won the Martha Joseph Prize, which is given to individuals or organizations who have contributed to the arts in Northeast Ohio. New Heights Arts Director Announced

Rachel Bernstein comes to Heights Arts from the Music Settlement

Heights Arts has hired a new director. Rachel Bernstein, who will replace outgoing director Peggy Spaeth July 2, has experience as a performance artist, educator and administrator, Spaeth said. “Which is a nicely rounded experience for someone who will be working in a small grassroots organization,” she added. Spaeth said that Bernstein, who has worked at the Cleveland Music Settlement for 15 years, plays the cello and teaches cello, displays a passion and vision for connecting arts to the community. “This isn’t just a job,” she added. “We’re a nonprofit and we’re very mission-driven. Local Artists' Work to Be Showcased at Heights Arts

New exhibit is from two recipients of Cuyahoga Arts & Culture grants

Artists exploring the relationships between built structures and natural landscapes will be featured at Heights Arts beginning March 1. Andy Curlowe and Mark Slankard, both recipients of Creative Workforce Fellowships, will showcase their photographs and paintings. The artists describe their own work: Andy Curlowe: The photographs reflect “landscape as a physical manifestation of those who live there, and their values and the power structures that basically shape the place.” Mark Slankard: The paintings “confront the ever-changing relationship between these realms. Focused on suggestive landscape, my work is a fusion of curved lines and blurred contours of natural forms which counter the sharp geometry of industry and calculation. Whether …

Heights Arts Hopes to Fill Executive Director Spot by April

The current executive director, Peggy Spaeth, announced she was stepping down on Jan. 17.

Heights Arts could have its new executive director by April.  Sharon Grosman, president of the Board of Trustees, said Friday that they have "had a good number of applicants" and they are conducting initial phone interviews. Then they will advance the process into personal interviews with the Board of Trustees members. Grosman said they are still accepting applications. "We still want people to apply because we want to very best person to apply," she said. Heights Arts Begins Search for New Executive Director

For the first time in its 13 year history, Heights Arts has an opening at executive director. Peggy Spaeth confirmed on Thursday that she would step down to pursue other projects. The organization's board of trustees is searching for her replacement and quickly posted job description and application information on its website. "The Executive Director is responsible for overall administration and management of the Heights Arts, including programs, fundraising and all business operations," according to the organization. Peggy Spaeth Steps Down as Heights Arts Executive Director

Spaeth said she is moving on to explore other projects

Peggy Spaeth has confirmed that she will soon leave Heights Arts, where she had been executive director since the organization was founded in 2000. "I've got some other projects I'd like to explore," she said Thursday morning. "I've been doing it for 13 years, so I figured I'd pass it along." The Heights Arts Board of Trustees first announced Spaeth's departure Thursday morning in a news release from President Sharon Grossman. The organization will conduct a search to find Spaeth's replacement. "It’s hard for me to believe that Peggy is stepping down from the helm — but she has a few other things she wants to achieve in this lifetime," Grossman said. New Heights Arts Show Opens Tonight

Heights Arts will host an opening reception tonight for the new David Mull + Martha Cliffel show

Editor's Note: This story was updated at 8:45 a.m. For the next five weeks, Heights Arts will display the work of two artists with no shortage of impressive work despite having no formal training. The David Mull and Martha Cliffel show kicks off tonight with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Heights Arts Gallery on Lee Road. The organization describes the work of both artists as rich with "obsessive detail." "Mull’s detailed, imaginative ink and graphite drawings are made on found paper, rocks, and other objects," according to the Heights Arts website.
