Heights Arts Holiday Store Offers Locally Made Gift Options

Open through Dec. 30, Heights Arts will sell ornaments, cards, jewelry and CDs by local artists

The Heights Arts Holiday Store is back for an 11th year, and executive director Peggy Spaeth believes 2012 marks the best edition yet to hit the organization's Lee Road gallery. "Every year is the best," she said. "There's a lot of things we don't carry year-round. We have more stock, more arts and crafts than we normally do." Though it's considered one of six Heights Arts galleries each year, the organization pushes it as a retail option to promote local shopping for local products. "We want the message to be loud and clear that you should come shop for local art for the holidays," Spaeth said. "It's like blatant commercialism. 'Paperworks' Show Opens Friday at Heights Arts

The opening reception will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 7.

Heights Arts will host an opening reception for its new show Paperworks from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7. The show, as its title suggests, highlights paper as a medium but also "as a carrier of artists' symbols," according to a press release from the local art gallery. Paperworks, curated by Andrea Joki, will feature artists who use drawing, painting, cut paper, collage, sculpture and pulp in their work. Heights Arts will showcase the work of the following artists: Shelly DiCello, Tom Balbo, Tim Callaghan, Laura Cooperman, Julie Friedman, Sarah Kabot, Margaret Kimura, Michael Loderstedt, Liz Maugans, Pam McKee, Darice Polo, Corrie Slawson, Dan Tranberg, Achala Wali and Trudy Wiesenberger. Heights Arts Show ‘Living Room’ Opens Friday

The Cleveland Heights gallery will showcase furniture and other objects from Northeast Ohio artists.

Heights Arts will showcase desks, shelves, coffee tables and other furniture and objects created by Northeast Ohio artists starting this weekend. The show Living Room will feature the work of eight contemporary furniture designers who use wood, steel, glass, found and recycled objects and other materials to create their unique pieces. Cheap Date: NO EXIT To Perform Free Concerts

NO EXIT New Music Ensemble is paying homage to jazz musician Eric Dolphy by performing and organizing three free local concerts.   The piano quartet, which plays contemporary classical art music and celebrates and promotes living musicians, has also invited saxophonist Bobby Selvaggio, drummer Chris Baker and trumpeter Scott McKee to perform with them. Cheap Date: Art Shows on Lee Road

Heights Arts and The Wine Spot are showcasing the work of local artists Friday night

Check back every Friday for Cheap Date: one weekend event or activity that won't break the bank. Tonight there are not one but two art shows opening on Lee Road that feature work from local artists. Heights Arts now has photographs of landscapes from five area artists in its gallery. The work "offers personal experiences of landscape — near, far and along the way," according to an event posting about the opening reception tonight. The Wine Spot is pairing art with wine at its opening reception for its exhibition TWO. Students from the Cleveland Institute of Art will have their artwork showcased, and The Wine Spot will also offer wine tastings. A new show opens at Heights Arts March 2 that highlights the work of local photographers. The show, Tophography, runs March 2 through April 14 at the Lee Road gallery. A special preview for members will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 1, and the public opening reception will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 2. Annual New Year's Day Pancake Breakfast at Tommy's Set for Sunday

Proceeds from the event benefit Heights Arts

Tommy's is once again hosting a New Year's Day Pancake Breakfast to benefit Heights Arts. The restaurant has flipped flapjacks for 12 years and raised more than $45,000 for the nonprofit arts organization on Lee Road, according to a press release from Heights Arts. The tradition began in 2001 when owner Tom Fello offered to help raise money for the Coventry Arch on the corner of Euclid Heights Boulevard and Coventry Road. The eat for art event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. Volunteers serve food, bus tables and wash dishes, and Fello mans the grill. Heights Arts Opening Tonight, Gallery Talk Saturday

Newest exhibit highlights photographer contact sheets

Heights Arts is hosting an opening reception from 6 to 9 tonight for its newest exhibit, Found Contacts: Overlooked selections from 20th century American photographic studios, which was organized by Lisa Kurzner. The show runs through Oct. 22 and features contact sheets, which photographers use to preview a series of shots before developing an image. “The contact sheet — now on the verge of extinction — captures the working life and thought processes of photographers by mapping out the sequence of shots on roll film in the studio or on the street,” wrote Heights Arts in a press release. “Choice, timing and bracketing are terms identified with proof sheets that record the unfolding relationships between the photographer and his subject.” …
