Thank you to John Lentz for providing the following game recap. The Heights Tiger girl's lacrosse dream of a state championship turned into a nightmare June 1 as the No. 1 Golden Bears of Upper Arlington dominated every aspect of the game, winning 11-5. The Tigers had beaten Upper Arlington in April 9-6 and came into this state semi-final game feeling confident. The Golden Bears scored in the first minute but Heights senior Margeaux Apple tied the score on a nice pass from senior Meg Lentz. Upper Arlington scored a minute later, but Heights showed their mettle tying the score 2-2 on a goal by sophomore Meredith Matia at 18:12. For the next 10 minutes, Heights sophomore goalie Madi Kohr saved shot after relentless shot. Upper Arlington …

The Heights High senior has tied and set new records at the school.
Meg Lentz never wanted to be the next Dana Lindsay. Lindsay set Cleveland Heights High School records in goals and points scored on the lacrosse field, won the 2006 state championship as a senior, then played at Stanford. Then Lentz, a senior, broke all of Lindsay’s records, and set more of her own. “She’s a gifted athlete and she’s combined that with a really strong ability to work hard, to improve on her athleticism,” said Heights coach Terry Saylor, who coached both players. She’s “pretty much everything you’d want an athlete to be.” Lentz now holds several school records including most goals in a career, season and game, and most points in a career and season. She’s played on the Ohio team in the national tournament since she was a …

Bees' late rally knocks off Tigers
As the Cleveland Heights girls’ lacrosse team held a three-goal lead midway through the second half against Medina, the Tigers' championship destiny appeared certain. Get past the defending Division I state champions, and the remaining road either had teams they dominated during the regular season or a rival who could have provided just the right amount of motivation for the top-ranked Tigers. Unfortunately, Cleveland Heights had the No. 3 Battling Bees on the ropes only to watch it unspool from a string to a bare thread that Medina junior attacker Ellie Hudson-Heck snapped with the game-winner at 5:19. That gave Medina an 11-10 victory in the Ohio Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association Division I regional final at Hawken School on Tuesday. …

Lentz, Lugasy and Jones power Tigers to 17-4 victory
Cleveland Heights girls’ lacrosse coach Terry Saylor had just one final task to perform toward the end of his team’s opening-round playoff victory against Westerville South. Saylor had to make sure all of his players got into the game, and with only seconds remaining, Rachel Evans bolted onto the field and a minor crisis was averted. That was as far as Cleveland Heights’ troubles went in trouncing Westerville South, 17-4, on Wednesday night at Hawken School as the Tigers gently flexed the firepower that has made them No. 1 in Ohio, according to laxpower.com. With varying amounts of playing time, the Cleveland Heights stars found much to their liking. Meg Lentz scored five goals and had an assist, Kelly Jones had four goals and two assists…

School's teams gearing up for playoff action
Although the Cleveland Heights girls’ lacrosse team had a very successful week on the field, they learned earlier this week they had to forfeit three games for using an ineligible player, said the team’s head coach. A Tigers defender received two yellow cards against Shaker Heights April 14, which under Ohio Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association rules merely knocks a player from that game, but under U.S. Lacrosse rules suspends a player for the following game. After the Shaker Heights game, the Tigers used the player against Western Reserve Academy the next day on April 15, and in two games against Mason and Lake Forest, IL, on Saturday, before realizing the difference between the two governing bodies' rules the following Monday, said coach …

Tigers coping as best they can under wet conditions
Rain rain go away, come again another day. For Cleveland Heights sports teams this spring season, it has been pouring most days, turning this simple nursery rhyme into a mournful blues tune. This week’s weather had potential, especially after a sunny Saturday that featured no cancellations of any sort. Spirits were high with five-day forecasts predicting a little sun and promises of competition. But Monday and Tuesday came and so did the rain, dampening the mood and knocking out much of the high school sports calendar, kicking off another period of waiting and watching. Most of the Cleveland Heights coaches said this is the worst spring they’ve seen for sports. “It’s a shame that the weather’s been like this, but we’re making the best of …
