Kathleen Cerveny Is Named Cleveland Heights' Newest Poet Laureate

Cerveny is encouraging the community to participate in her creative process with The Heights Poetweet Project

Heights Arts has named Kathleen Cerveny as the city of Cleveland Heights' poet laureaute for 2013-2014. She will be joined by outgoing Poet Laureate Cavana Faithwalker and will read a poem or two at the Cleveland Heights City Council meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall. Cerveny has been involved in the local scene as an artist, poet, grantmaker and advocate. A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, Cerveny was a producer of arts programming for public radio station WCPN 90.3 FM. Cerveny joined the Cleveland Foundation in 1991 and, as the Foundation’s Director of Arts Initiatives, shaped the Foundation’s Arts and Culture programs. Heights Arts appoints a new poet laureate for the city of Cleveland Heights every two years. This year, the nonprofit arts organization chose Cavana Faithwalker for the role.  Poet laureates share their work and promote the creative writing form in the community, said Peggy Spaeth, executive director of Heights Arts. Gail Bellamy, the city's most recent poet laureate, introduced Faithwalker, and each read a poem at the City Council meeting April 20.

Cavana Faithwalker, a businessman, artist and educator, will read his work at Wednesday's City Council meeting

When Cavana Faithwalker entered the Phoenix Coffee on Lee Road earlier this week, it seemed almost everybody knew him. Patrons and employees greeted him with, “Hey Cav!” Faithwalker, a poet and longtime Heights resident, “brings something very warm and unique to our community,” said Peggy Spaeth of Heights Arts, the nonprofit community arts organization. City Council will recognize Faithwalker as the newest Cleveland Heights poet laureate at its regular meeting Wednesday, and he will read one of his pieces. Though he has an idea of which poem he will share, sometimes he changes his mind at the last minute.  Before the meeting, he will be the guest speaker at Wiley Middle School's Poetry Café, and get an early start on his task of bringing …

Term for Cleveland Heights poet laureate Gail Bellamy ends

Cavana Faithwalker is expected to be appointed the city’s fifth poet laureate in April during National Poetry Month.  Faithwalker, 54, has worked with the Cleveland Museum of Art and Nia Coffeehouse, an open mic poetry night. He also runs his own consulting business, Left Thumbprint Solutions.  "He has a long history of public poetry,” said Peggy Spaeth, executive director of Heights Arts, the nonprofit that started the poet laureate project in 2005.  Now he will be tasked with “connecting the community with poetry,” Spaeth said.  A Heights Arts committee, Heights Writes, recommends a poet laureate to Cleveland Heights City Council.
