CH-UH Lay Facilities Committee Appoints Chairperson, Discusses Charge

Patrick Mullen, executive director of Reaching Heights, will chair the 25-person committee tasked with determining what aspects of the facilities master plan the community will support.

The 25-member Cleveland Heights-University Heights lay facilities committee appointed a chairperson and determined its goals at its first meeting Wednesday night at Cleveland Heights High School. The group appointed Patrick Mullen, executive director of Reaching Heights, to chair the committee created by the CH-UH School Board to examine the facilities master plan and determine what aspects of the plan the community would support. "We got to a point where the board decided if they put (the facilities master plan bond issue) on the ballot this year, it probably wouldn’t have passed," Mullen said. "Broadly, our task is to come up with recommendations on a plan that is instructionally sound and fiscally responsible and can enjoy broad …

Either go with a traditional model of ~5 elementary schools (K-5), 2 middle schools, and 1 high school, or go with Plan C but make Gearity or Wiley a primary school (PK-3) location and instead use Canterbury as an intermediate grade (4-8) site. Oh, and please strongly consider re-opening an alternative school similar to what Taylor Academy was a decade go, but make it from grades 7-10. This will …   more ›

State Commission Accepts Plan C, Commits Funding

The CH-UH School Board must now decide if it wants to spend $1 million toward Plan C, the facilities master plan, to lock in the rate of funding that this year created $22.8 million. And it must also decide how to move forward with Plan C.

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board has much to discuss at its Aug. 21 special meeting dedicated to the facilities master plan. What timeline are members working with? What has the community suggested? Where should the district's administration move from here? One item they plan to discuss, while a bit more concrete, is not simple. Superintendent Douglas Heuer announced at the regular meeting Aug. 7 that the Ohio School Facilities Commission has accepted Plan C, the facilities master plan approved by the board 3-2 at its July 3 meeting. The board also voted 4-1 to submit that plan to the OSFC. The OSFC, which administers the state’s comprehensive K-12 public school construction program, also committed the state to …

Perhaps is the district is unwilling to keep school buildings open for the meetings, they could utilize the Public Libraries. Or maybe the City of CH could be persuaded to let them have it at the CH Community Center.   more ›

Local Organizations Hosting Meeting Tonight To Discuss Engaging Community in CH-UH Facilities Master Plan

Reaching Heights and FutureHeights will host the meeting at the Lee Road Library at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1

Reaching Heights and FutureHeights are hosting a meeting at the Lee Road Library in Room A at 7 p.m. tonight, Aug. 1, to discuss ideas for engaging residents in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights facilities master planning process. A primary focus of the meeting will be to brainstorm ideas to increase citizen involvement and participation in determining the future of school buildings, said Patrick Mullen, executive director of Reaching Heights. "The goal is to identify key questions, objections, and areas of agreement in the community, and figure out how to close information gaps that exist, recognizing that ultimate responsibility for placing any bond issue on the ballot rests with the Board of Education," Mullen said.  The CH-UH …
