Cedar Lee District Moves One Step Closer To Revamp

The Cedar Lee SID hosted meetings to get feedback on the plans, and an engineering study is almost complete.

The Cedar Lee Business District is one step closer to getting a revamp that’s been in the works for the past five years. The Cedar Lee Special Improvement District hosted a series of meetings at the end of March to update merchants and residents about plans to revitalize the one-mile strip from Cain Park to the Lee Road Library. Engineers from CDM Smith have collected data, analyzed the lighting and revised conceptual plans, and they should be finished with the engineering study and a draft of the report by the end of May. Once that step is complete, they can submit plans to the Ohio Department of Transportation. Architecture firm studioTECHNE designed the improvements, which include adding: “You know those places you go that you just want…

I moved back to the eastside after being a westsider for 20 years. I love Cleveland Heights, it's convenient bus locations, gorgeous homes and abudance of support of local businesses by the community is what drew me back. I would like to see more greenery and benches especially in the lot by Meadowbrook where the condos where supposed to go. I am a frequent customer in the Cedar-Lee District, the…   more ›

Architects Propose 2 CH-UH School Design Ideas

Plans would close about a half a dozen schools

Architects working on a facilities master plan for the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District presented two construction proposals at a meeting Wednesday night that would close about a half a dozen schools. In “Design Idea A,” Heights High remains a high school, and pre-kindergarten through eighth grade campuses are created at Monticello, Roxboro and Wiley. In “Design Idea B,” Heights High remains a high school, K-8 campuses are created at Roxboro and Wiley and PK-3 programs exist at Oxford, Canterbury and Coventry. The two options were narrowed down from nine original plans. In both proposals, the Board of Education would move to the Delisle Educational Options Center (the former Taylor Road Academy), and the options …

Third CH-UH Facilities Master Plan Community Meeting Set For Wednesday

Residents will review proposals and compare costs of various plans

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District has hired companies to devise a master plan to renovate buildings in the district. But officials want to hear from residents as the architecture firms draft the overhaul. The first CH-UH Facility Master Plan Community Meeting was Nov. 30, and about 80 residents and parents attended. The next meeting is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Heights High Social Room, and residents will review proposals and compare costs of various plans. The forum that night in November included small group work, where residents wrote their priorities on paper for the district and firms to review. These were taken into consideration while drafting the proposals, according to a press release…

CH-UH District Hires Fundraising Consultant

Cramer & Associates will advise the district on how to raise money from non-profits and foundations to help pay for its plan to renovate or rebuild every building in the district and other initiatives

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District has hired a consultant to study how CH-UH can raise money through philanthropic initiatives to help pay for the district’s plan to rebuild or renovate every school. The CH-UH School Board approved hiring Cramer & Associates, of Dublin, OH, to study how the district can network and develop partnerships with non-profits, foundations and philanthropists to help reduce the financial burden of what could be a more than $170 million project from the district and taxpayers. The consultant was also hired to help the district identify potential curriculum-based partnerships with universities, hospitals and other institutions for its "Pathways of Choice" plan, said Angee Shaker, communications…

:: Happy to hear that they're looking into ways to "help reduce the financial burden" of the project. However, I'm terribly concerned that a fund-raising consultant was hired to "help the district form curriculum and other partnerships with universities, hospitals and other institutions" since this is not an area of expertise for this firm. It also speaks volume to the current state of planning …   more ›

CH-UH District Hopes to Engage Residents in Building Renovation Plans Again

CH-UH District Hopes to Engage Residents in Building Renovation Plans

The first meeting will be Nov. 30

Attendance has been sparse at many of the meetings dedicated to discussing the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District's plans to overhaul its antiquated buildings. Now that school officials are moving forward with plans to renovate or replace all facilities in the district, they have started scheduling forums for residents to learn more about the planning process and to provide their feedback. District officials hope for a big turnout, and they're offering food and activities for children at the meetings to encourage people to stop by and accommodate busy parents. The first public meeting will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Heights High Social Room. At the October board meeting, members approved two …

Video: Heights Arts Showcases Local Architecture Firms in New Space

The 'Building Below the Radar' exhibit opened in June and will showcase the work of three Cleveland-based architecture firms until July 23

Heights Arts opened its newly expanded space June 10 with a new exhibit, Building Below the Radar, which showcases the work of Cleveland-based architecture firms.  One of the most recognizable projects was from the firm studioTECHNE, which redesigned the Lee Road Library, the main branch of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library. The firm also designed the installation in the gallery — boxes framing photos of work from the different architects hang from the ceiling. At night, the photos glow. Other featured architects are Kordalski Architects, Inc. and Anthony Paskevich & Associates.  As part of the exhibit, the organization is offering a free series of discussions called "Radar Reports." The first was a curator and …

New Cedar Lee Streetscape in the Works

Business owners and others combine forces and plan to give the Cedar Lee area a face-lift

As we all know, the Cedar Lee business district is a popular destination for those seeking unique culinary treats, independent films, outdoor entertainment in the summer, art gallery treasures and many other attractions. Over the years, however, any business district will begin to show its age, thereby losing contact with the people who enrich and enliven the area. That is why plans are in place to revitalize the strip of Lee Road between Cain Park and the main branch of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library. This mile-long Cedar Lee Streetscape project is being developed by the Cedar Lee Special Improvement District (SID) in cooperation with the City of Cleveland Heights and the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating …

More low price establishments? I hope not. What CH needs is more residents with money and good jobs. If not for more affluent visitors who visit from other suburbs, Lee Road would look like Garfield Heights.   more ›
