Cindy Young says her fight, including 16 chemotherapy treatments, was initially like looking up at a mountain
In talking to Cindy Young, you might hear the Cleveland Heights resident crack a joke or loosely refer to the past three years of her life as the "breast cancer odyssey." She hasn't always taken that light-hearted approach, but the support of friends and family made her appreciate the opportunity she had a chance to fight through the disease. "The support was incredible," she said. "They were always there, helping me through every step of it, so I never felt like I was alone. "Also, I have to say that if you're going to have cancer, a great place to get it is Cleveland. We have great medical centers here." Ten percent of purchases made during Blush Boutique's benefit party will be donated to The Gathering Place
A Coventry Village boutique will turn pink this Saturday in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Blush Boutique will host a "Passion for Pink" benefit party from 5 to 10 p.m. at 1783 Coventry Road. The shop will be filled will pink decorations, dresses and miniature martini glasses to celebrate the perseverance of cancer survivors like owner Laurie Klopper's best friend, Cindy Young. "I'd always heard about breast cancer and I ran the (Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure) for years, but you never think this is going to affect you until it hits somebody you know," Klopper said. But she was just so upbeat during the entire experience." Young, a Cleveland Heights resident and three-year survivor, will also attend the event. Ten percent of …

By the nature of its side effects, cancer treatment can make a private battle a very public affair. For a woman with cancer, having a bald head or pale skin can make her feel like she's being targeted by a bright spotlight and a banner that says, "Cancer patient." But now more than ever, there are resources for women that will put the spotlight back on their work, their accomplishments and their life—and change that banner to simply read, "Woman." Though Cleveland Heights resident Cynnaria Caver has never battled cancer, her hair started thinning when she was barely a teenager. She became an expert at styling her hair to camouflage the bad spots and ease her insecurity. The experience inspired her to take her knack for taming strands to …

The Gathering Place offers many specialized support groups for people with cancer and their families. For example, there are meetings for young people with cancer, caregivers, cancer survivors and physicians with cancer, to name a few.
