ReplyMr. Mitchell,
I am sorry to have upset you with the drawing; I never meant to send a negative message about you or any other current businesses. It honestly never entered my mind. I was talking about a proposal on Meadowbrook-Lee.
But, I am happy that you read the article and chimed in. I feel our efforts to stop a COMMERCIAL and residential tax abatement and free land to Orlean Co. SUPPORTS all the other businesses and landlords in the area. Subsidizing Orlean will hurt your business. If you have to compete in the market without an abatement, shouldn't everyone else?

On the article Cleveland Heights Plans To Construct New Salt Storage Facility By Dec. 21

ReplyI called the company hired to build this salt storage facility, Legacy Building Solutions, and they told me they have no office in Ohio. They send a work crew from out of state to build the building.
Ed Kelley and city council have a track record of hiring out of state companies. The company that updated the website is from California, the company, Camiros
<a href="http://www.camiros.com/latest-news/sustainability-audit-in-cleveland-heights/"</a> that the city hired for the "sustainability code" is from Chicago.Citizens in Cleveland Heights give our elected officials the benefit of the doubt and assume they make the best decisions for us. In this case I think the facts do not support this. It is clear they do not take into account our local economy. They have exported 3 large ticket items out of state.

ReplyTHAT PROPERTY IS BRINGING IN $40,000 IN TAXES EVERY YEAR. Tear down homes that are vacant, delinquent and eyesores.
You have just taken $40,000 of reliable income OFF THE TAX ROLLS to replace it with what? Many vacant houses in the area are providing NO TAX INCOME!
You are going to charge the owner the $40,000 to pull the building down. That is the best deal he could ever get. It will save him from paying taxes ever again and now the city has to do something with it.
WHY DIDN'T YOU ASK THE COMMUNITY WHAT WE THOUGHT ABOUT THIS?And, that public art on the building should be preserved.

ReplyMr. Friedman was quoted as saying: "But when you look at the residential fabric in Cleveland Heights, especially the multi-family apartments, there really hasn’t been a new apartment built there in years. The Orlean Company has built Bluestone, and we can’t tell you how many people take a look at some of our condos and say, 'Boy, I wish I could rent this.'"
You CAN RENT condos in TWO tax-abated condo developments ACROSS THE STREET from Bluestone.
You can rent a condo in One Severance Place (former Kaiser building) and at Courtyards at Severance. They were abated to be sold, but now they are RENTED.

On the Blog Post Facts do not support a tax abatement for Meadowbrook-Lee.

ReplyI should have been more clear.
The Meadowbrook-Lee plan includes both SUBSIDY and abatement.
The subsidy is the land being GIVEN to the developer.
We all paid $1 million to buy and remediate this land. (There were 2 gas stations there at one time and the toxins had to be removed from the soil.)Why should we GIVE this land to any private entity?
Let the market decide if we need more commercial and residential space.
Is our city so poor and undesirable that we go about with a tin cup begging people to "TAKE OUR LAND, PLEASE!"

ReplyI would support development if the market demanded it. If a developer wanted to build something WITHOUT public subsidy, I would thank them for that and wish them all the luck in the world
I do not support TAX ABATEMENTS and giving them LAND FOR FREE to encourage development. (Taxpayers put $1 million into acquiring and remediating the land.)
If someone wants the land, they should buy it on the open market; we should not give them this public land for free.
The two tax abated developments: Courtyards at Severance and 500 Severance Place are now renting instead of selling their condos. @A. Pantsios asks a good question, above. -

ReplyThanks, Adam.
@Emily Jones. I stand by all of the numbers in my post. Courtyards at Severance opened in 2008:http://www.courtyardscleveland.com/2008_11_01_archive.html. All 3 tax-abated residential developments on Mayfield were started many years ago. The Bluestone and Kenilworth numbers are correct per the website you listed yourself. There are 21 vacancies at Bluestone. Here is a live search for condos for sale in Cleveland Heights. http://cleveland.condo.com/ForSale/United-States/Ohio/Cleveland-Heights-Condos. The last paragraph on this page is reflective of the fierce competition for sales in this market: http://www.highrises.com/cleveland/the-courtyards/

We are in the process of removing the drawing that was offensive to Mr. Mitchell and have replaced it. As the great philosopher John Dewey pointed out, business and citizens are in a community and must treat each other morally and ethically and work together for the welfare of the whole community. We have to work together.
