Boy, 9, Dies In Possible Drowning

A 9-year-old South Euclid boy died in a possible drowning Tuesday at a Euclid YMCA.

UPDATE: The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office has issued a correction on the hometown of the boy. He was from South Euclid, not Cleveland Heights.

Euclid Police and YMCA officials are investigating the probable drowning Tuesday of a 9-year-old boy at the Euclid YMCA, reports Patch news partner WEWS News Channel 5.

Around 4 p.m. Tuesday, Lonnie Smith, 9, of South Euclid, was pulled from the water and transported to Euclid General Hospital where he was then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center and later died.

According to Rick Haase with the YMCA of Greater Cleveland, a daycare center rented out the pool Tuesday.

According to Haase, there were 26 children in the pool at the time of the incident and three lifeguards on duty.

The incident remains under investigation and the pool is closed until further notice as it is considered a crime scene.

The group who rented the pool has been identified by the YMCA as Always Available Daycare.
